Overview

The Algorithms in Structural Bioinformatics (AlgoSB) series of research schools focuses on the dissemination of novel or recent theoretical approaches in structural bioinformatics in the largest sense. Leading researchers from institutes around the world deliver lectures together with hands-on practical courses. A fundamental goal of the school is to encourage a rigorous algorithmic view of these ideas while identifying new directions for exploration.
AlgoSB is aimed at bringing together scientists from different disciplinary background (computer science, biophysics, biochemistry, mathematics, …) in a pleasant setting amenable to learning new approaches and creating synergies for future work.

AlgoSB 2019: RNA structural bioinformatics in Marseille

calanques.jpgThe 2019 edition of AlgoSB was dedicated to computational and mathematical approaches for the discovery and structural modeling of RiboNucleic Acids. It was located in Luminy/Marseille in the heart of the French Riviera, at the Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques (CIRM), located within 10 min walking distance to the world-reknowned Calanques de Marseille.

CIRM_facade.jpeg The program of the 2019 edition provided an overview of structure-centric methods in RNA bioinformatics, consisting of lectures delivered in English by international experts in the field of RNA Bioinformatics. Key questions included: What are the key principles underlying the folding of RNA?, How to predict the structure of RNA at the 2D level? in 3D?, How to locate and interpret RNA data?, How to integrate experimental information (SHAPE, DMS...) in structure prediction?, How to design RNAs (and why)?, How to model RNA/protein interactions?...

classesEach lecture was dedicated to one the specific topics listed on our program page and was introduced by a set of real-life examples of biological mechanisms influenced by the topic. Following the morning theoretical lectures, hands-on sessions were organized in the afternoon, demonstrating on participant laptops how to install and use leading computational methods to analyze real-life data.
